"BRIEF HISTORY OF DUMALNEG ILOCOS NORTE"

Etymology Legends purport that the district was originally called Banbanag. This place was the meeting place of all the Yapayao’s or Itnegs (Isnegs), where “camarin” was built for the purpose. Significant meetings and other cases of legal importance were decided in the said place. The place was later designated Colonia Dumalneg, then after some time it was changed into Rancheria Dumalneg. This may be due to the fact that most of the inhabitants of Banbanag and surrounding sitios moved to a creek called Dumalneg.

The said place was very suitable for cultivation due to its wide plains and the slopes of the mountains bordering the river are suitable for caingin. When the place or district was organized, it was and still is called Dumalneg. Nobody can really attest as to where Dumalneg really evolved, except that Dumalneg is the name of a creek , the derivation of its present name, the Municipality of Dumalneg . The former meeting place of the inhabitants of Dumalneg is now occupied by the elementary school of Dumalneg , The camarin which was built in Banbanag was demolished and never reconstructed. The present sitios are Siraong, Sta Maria, Alilem, Cabaritan, Capcapitan, Asasaan, Namoc, Nalames, Mangadamay, Banbanag, Masamuyao, Salicsic, Sisilongen, Baset, Baracbac, Kinalo, Barbarit, Arapang, Tapaoan, Simmuba, Nanagpatan,Napidad and Bobog.
